OK.780XLT arrived today. All seems in order and radio is in nice condition, all present and correct.I've just had a look at the manual (gulp!) and think I may find some things just a little bit daunting. That comes from using Realistic PRO 2006s for years.I've got 2 of them, but this baby seems a different affair altogether.Wish me luck and watch this space.

Gerry,Ireland.
Welcome to the group, I think you'll enjoy your new purchase, are you
considering hooking it up to a computer and using one of the available
programs to enhance your monitoring, you can enjoy it just fine without the
computer as it's very easy to program, it just makes frequency management
a little easier. Be careful with the front knobs, they break if
mishandled, cats are experts at breaking them,

Hi Michael, and thanx for the welcome.Yes,I hope to use the scanner with my PC and I've heard that the software named ARC780 is the one to go for for this purpose.I'd appreciate some recommendations tho'.I've also read about about some of the slight problems that this radio can throw up apart from the breaking knobs, namely dimming of the screen after some years. Is this a common problem would you say?I've read of some fixes for the problem but I hope it doesn't come to that as I am most definitely NOT technically minded.

Hi Gerry,
Congratulations on your "new" 780XLT!
Probably the best thing you can do is to get the ARC780 programming software.
It will really simplify your programming tasks.
Good luck and have fun!

I try not to use Win 7 too much but have you tried any compatibility
modes or running as admin?

No. that did not help. I haven't had much luck with anything working
with the windoz compatibility mode thingy. Proscan worked great right
out of the "box". I think the cost was ~US$50.

I just downloaded the latest version of ProScan, you can run it as a demo
for 30 days before registering to try it out. Am running the latest
version of windows 7 64bit, it seems to run just fine, the remote IP server
also works well for me, (running it for about three hours now without any
issues), it seems to play well with other programs.

Worth giving it a try but is $50 should you choose to purchase a license
key.

I agree on the Arc-780 program, it works and is stable, there was once one
better for logging but it's not being supported any more. I use a Butel
program for my GRE radios too and it also works well.

Don't be intimidated by the operation of the radio, just go in and learn
the menus, once you figure them out you'll be operating it just like your
old ones but with more options, take your time, it seems daunting at first
only because of the added menus.

I've had a look at this as well but unfortunately it comes up with 'No Response' on the scanner screen.I noticed that my model which is the UBC780XLT was not included on the list of scanners, only the BC780XLT.Running XP.Could this be significant?

Hi Gerry,

That usually means you have a problem with the serial connection. Make
sure you have the right port, etc. I'm not sure if you are using a USB
to serial converter. Some of them do not work for radio stuff. I just
downloaded v6.2. Works OK. Also AFAIK the UBC is just an unblocked
version of the BC780xlt. There is a form on the Proscan website or you
could contact Bob Aune, the author of ProScan.

Don,thanx for that. You know, there are times when I think that I shouldn't be allowed near a computer or a scanner without an appropriate adult.Had I read the Manual beforehand I would have known to Press and Hold the 'E' button to put the scanner into Remote mode.I know that now. However in my disgust I had uninstalled ProScan from my PC.So having discovered my faux-pas,I tried to reinstall it,only to be told that my 30 day trial period had expired! Not to be outdone,I installed Proscan on another PC that I just happened to have handy, held the 'E' button, adjusted the baud rate and actually got the thing running.I have now however inadvertently deleted all the frequencies that I had stored in Bank 1.There was only 20 or so as I only got the scanner yesterday,so it's not too bad.
(Note to self:Read the manual,Stupid!)

Onwards and upwards!

Right, thank you Michael. One other thing, the ProScan software seems pretty good, but I'd like to know how,in other's opinions,it compares to the ARC780.I feel I could get to grips with ProScan OK as I really just want to be able to program the 780 from my keyboard for now. Both are capable of much more I'm sure.

Yes, normal.
Couple more little queries guys,if you din't mind.I noticed that when entering some Mil-Air frequencies that the 780 would tend to 'round them up' to the nearest whole Mhz. EG when I entered 236.175,it appeared as 236.2000 on the scanner.Normal,or a wrong setting somewhere?
My 780 seems to run kinda warm after a while.Pretty warm in fact.Again normal or not?
Also it seems from some research on the subject that I may as well forget about Trunking,as there are practically NO users in N.Ireland.A pity,as I was looking forward to trying it out.
Me and my 780,ProScan,and FlightRadar24 are doing just fine for the moment.I think I will go ahead and buy Proscan.Seems to do everything I need it to do.

Hi,

As far as the BC780 running warm can be a good thing as it keeps
moisture away. You can cool it down some by turning the display back
lighting off. Or on only when the squelch breaks depending on the software.

If your frequencies are rounding off then you need to change the step size.

ARC780 is good as well but doesn't work on my windoz Vista or 7 so I had
to go to Proscan.

lighting off. Or on only when the squelch breaks depending on the software.
If your frequencies are rounding off then you need to change the step size.
ARC780 is good as well but doesn't work on my windoz Vista or 7 so I had
to go to Proscan.

Thanx for that Don.I sorted out the step size thing. In answer to member md6imx's query on one of my photos,as as far as I am aware, there are no restrictions in the Demo version of ProScan. All banks can be programmed. As always,I may be wrong, and usually am,so maybe other members can comment.

I don't know how far the part numbers differ from the UBC780XLT and the BC780XLT. The parts may be the same in this case. BC780XLT has a NPN Epitaxial Planar Silicon Transistor in a TO-220ML package. In my BC78XLT the part number is 2SD1667R. When you turn the volume knob and switch the unit from off position to on position you are completing a circuit involving this transistor. The unit is designed so that the center pole (the positive lead) of the power plug is connected to one side of a two pin transformer, the other side (other pin) of this transformer is routed to one side of the On/OFF switch built into the Volume/Squelch control, when the knob is turned to the on position, the switch inside the knob closes and sends the (+) power to various circuits and directly to pin two of J7. J7 connects to a wire harness that connects to a small and simple PCB board that has the 2SD1667R transistor. This transistor is mounted directly to a shelf made in the frame directly behind the area where the VFO/SELECT Knob and VOLUME-SQUELCH knob meet on the front panel. If you unplug your unit, turn it to ON (discharge the stored charge), flip the unit so the speaker now directs upwards, remove the four screws holding the cover containing the speaker, and carefully lift the cover side that runs along the faceplate, you can take a glimpse at the black transistor I am referencing, it will be on your left hand side, just be careful not to lift the cover too high as you could break your internal speaker components. the unit body (the black part) is 16mm X 10mm X 4.5mm and has three legs that protrude 14mm and are 0.75mm X 0.7mm. you will notice that the legs pass through the simple PCB. Connected to that small PCB will be a three wire harness that connects to a three pin connector on the main PCB marked as J7.

The reason you notice the unit warming up when on is because of this transistor. The frame serves as a heat sinking radiator which is why the unit feels warmest directly behind the VFO/SELECT and VOLUME-SQUELCH knobs when the unit is on. This is normal operation, all transistors dissipate energy as heat, similar to how a car engine gets hot when it is running.

Dimming the backlight will only reduce the heat produced by the backlight diodes, and may make it hard to navigate the device. Since the lights are isolated to the front panel, the backlight suggestion will not address the greater source of heat, and it may not be practical.

I do not suggest using any fans as these produce magnetic fields and can impact your scanner. If you can't sleep because the heat concerns you that much, you can go out and salvage some old computer processor heat sink/s (ideally copper, aluminum will work, ideally you can find a copper cored aluminum heat sink) and Artic Silver 5 Thermal compound. Securely and tightly fasten the heat sink/s to the side of the case via bolt and nut (or copper screws which will match the existing case screw thread size and step.)

I think the most basic entry level heat pump solution is best made with an Intel Slot 1 processor Heat sink. This type of heat sink is not too large and suitable for the scanner's design. Just remember, Artic Silver 5 compound and NO use of a fan!
